I just love Granny squares because they were a big part of my childhood! I grew up in the 70’s, a time when granny squares were all the rage! Not only was the granny square afghan a staple in many homes, granny square vests, dresses, pants, hats, and ponchos were very popular. As a child of the 70’s, I wore my granny square poncho to school!

Even though the granny square was popular in the 70’s, the traditional granny square was created more than 100 years before that time. In researching on the internet, I found many different dates about when the granny square was created, but most of the information said “Mrs. Phelps came up with the granny square pattern and it was first published on April 4, 1885 in the “Prairie Farmers Magazine”. The pattern was published again in 1891 in the “The Art of Crocheting”. Since its first publication, the granny square became a trend in the 1930’s and the 1970’s.
