Scrapghan Travel Project

This crochet scrapghan travel project turns leftover yarn into colorful granny squares, with each one stitched along the way. Every square adds a unique memory, coming together to create a cozy blanket filled with stories from the journey.

How it Began- September 28, 2023
I wanted a project that was portable, since the plan was to work on the project while on vacation and on long car rides, so the scrapghan travel project was born.
I started by getting the bag of scrap Dk yarn, (It is better to use the same yarn weight for your project), 3 skeins of Stylecraft Special Dk in Midnight-1011 which to put a frame around each square and to eventually join them together, a size G (4mm) crochet hook, yarn needle and scissors.
As you can see, colors were mixed, there was no rhyme or reason. The color choices for each square were done by randomly pulling scraps of yarn from the bag and putting them together. They are all framed in the midnight yarn, which will be used to eventually join the squares together.

Scrapghan Update-December 29, 2023
So far I have been able to make 50, 4-row Framed Granny Squares and have started to join them together.
I tried different ways of joining the granny squares together, but for this project the invisible join method looked the best.

Scrapghan Update #2-March 29, 2024
To date, I have been able to make 75 -3 1/2″ (8.9 cm) squares, using the 4-row Framed Granny Square pattern and have put together 54 squares into a colorful Scrapghan that is about 26″ (66 cm) x 29″ (73.6 cm). This is just the beginning since I have only used half of my scrap yarn and will be making more granny squares and adding a border.

Scrapghan Update #3- August 30, 2024
This on-going project was started in September 2023 as a way to use up the scrap yarn that I have been collecting over the years.
To date, I have been able to make 162 -3 1/2″ (8.9 cm) squares, using the 4-row Framed Granny Square pattern and have put together 154 squares into a colorful Scrapghan that is about 38″ (96.5 cm) x 49″ (124.4 cm).
The plan is to make a Scrapghan that is 49″ (124.4 cm) x 56″ (142.25 cm) using 224 squares and then adding a border.

Granny Scrapghan Complete-January 2, 2025
I used a basic border for Scrapghan as to not take away from the bright colorful granny squares. This border complements the granny squares since it is done with the same three dc cluster that granny squares are created with.
The granny squares for the Scrapghan have been my travel project in 2023 and 2024 (it is easy to take small amounts of yarn on the plane or in the car!). Some of the squares were made on trips to Texas, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Greece.
This has been a fun project and I look forward to a new one in the future! Maybe a crochet-a-long??
